Decide for yourself. Here's a piece of the story:
Feb. 7, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has criticized Senator John Edwards, a candidate for the US presidency, for hiring staff members with a record of vituperative anti-Catholic rhetoric.
The Edwards campaign recently took on two women to work on its internet operations: Amanda Marcotte as blogmaster, and Melissa McEwan as netroots coordinator. Bill Donahue, the president of the Catholic League, called attention to the viciously anti-Catholic statements the two women have posted on other internet sites.
Amanda Marcotte has written that “the Catholic church is not about to let something like compassion for girls get in the way of using the state as an instrument to force women to bear more tithing Catholics,” Donahue noted. After an obscene reference to the Virgin birth, she commented that if Mary had aborted, Catholics would “have to justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology.”
Sure enough, it sounds rather bigoted to me. It'll be interesting to follow up on whether Edwards keeps Marcotte and McEwan on. Thus far, early in round one, it looks as though he's gotten a black eye from his own team. Perhaps they're courting the blatantly irreverent or maybe radical atheist vote. There's only one route that Mr. Edwards can take--show them the door.
