I learned this morning that Msgr. Michael Mulvey, the Administrator for the currently vacant Diocese of Austin, has been named as the new bishop of Corpus Christi. Msgr. Mulvey will succeed Bishop Edmond Carmody, a native of Ireland, who was actually the new Bishop of Tyler, Texas shortly after I went through the RCIA in that diocese.
Msgr. Mulvey was part of a group of 359 priests ordained by Pope Paul VI on June 29, 1975, the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul, which was also the 12th anniversary of Paul VI's papacy. Interestingly it's reported that a good number of that group have gone on to become bishops.
Best wishes and congratulations to Msgr. Mulvey. He will be missed here in Austin. Now with even greater intensity we anticipate the naming of our new bishop...
