« Greater Faith in Fewer Words | Main | Another Kind of Interview »

October 13, 2006

I'm sure it must have added a great deal to your fatigue level, and the stress of being overwhelmed with work, but I think it's really wonderful that your parish was conducting Confirmation interviews. I've never heard of that being done, and it must have been a great blessing to the children. I'm grateful the Lord is keeping you from depression and anxiety with the stress of your workload and commitments, and filling you with His peace instead.

forget me not

Amen and well said Gabrielle!

Anyone who is loved by a child can be sure God is expressing love. Those little arms are made of holiness..and what's this, we are allowed the privilege of hugging this little being right back? How God fills a moment for His little ones, all. This is th sort of penance one of our priests gives.. truly transformative, 100% positive. I wish I could lunch with a child today. Maybe one can do so with the child Jesus, via all the terribly suffering children across the globe. Surely anyone who gives their life and labor to children are skirting the Holy of Holies. Out of your hard day(s), Deacon, many gifts come to others along with yourself.

Gabrielle, we have Confirmation interviews here as well. Our teens are offered the chance to delay their confirmation, if they feel they aren't ready. Of course, some are not ready and are simply swept along into the tide of preparation/expectation by family, etc. I worried about that once, well before facilitating Confirmation classes, in the lower grades, and a RE Director asked whether I had known all I needed to know in one lump sum, or did the Holy Spirit fill in gaps as I went along in conversion. Oh my, if only more children had a Deacon Dan to run questions by. I hope your Confirmation students know of this website. :-)

I love your site just came by it I will pray for you that God will give you strength I know what it is like not to sleep I have many sleepless night
God bless

Deacon DW

Thank you--all of you--for your kind comments and prayers.

Joanne, welcome to our little forum. Please feel free to comment any time you'd like. I welcome and appreciate your prayers and certainly mine will be with you as well. I have a Joanne that I've been hanging around with for a number of years now. When I first saw your comment I thought maybe she was responding to my claim that she doesn't read the blog--she actually does read it when she gets time.

Regarding Confirmation interviews, they're something that are required here in the Diocese of Austin. I believe the practice is becoming more widespread. Canon 890 of the Code of Canon Law requires that pastors of parishes "are to take care that the faithful are properly instructed to receive the sacrament and come to it at the appropriate time."

The interview is one means of meeting this requirement. At my parish the preparation program itself is quite thorough--really, and ideally, it's the culmination of many years of religious education.

forget me not

Heart like a the child in Psalm 131...
My heart is not proud, O LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like a weaned child with its mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.

O Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both now and forevermore.
